David Calderwood Young was born in Cowdenbeath in 1915, the son of David and Helen Young. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland. 

 

During the Second World War Young left his job at the bank's Dunbar branch to join the army. By 1944 he was a Lieutenant in the Reconnaissance Corps. He died of wounds in Italy on 8 February 1944. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Annabel Rhona, whom he had married in 1940.
