Alexander Gourlay Abbot was born in Camelon in 1898, the son of James Abbot, an elementary school teacher, and his wife Jennie. In May 1915, when he was about 17 years old, he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Falkirk branch. He later joined the army, serving in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and later the Seaforth Highlanders.

 

Lance Corporal Abbot died on the Western Front on 20 September 1917.

 

Alexander Abbot is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
