John Arnold was born in Annan on 8 May 1867, the son of John Arnold and his wife Nicholas. In about 1896 he married his wife Hannah, and they had five children together: Grace, John, George, Jack and Phyllis.

 

After retiring from a career in the Royal Navy Arnold took a job as a messenger at the Manchester head office of Williams Deacon's Bank. He was recalled to the navy during the First World War. He died on 1 February 1918, while serving as a Chief Petty Officer on HMS Renown. He was 50 years old.
