Ernest John Bradford was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1897, the son of Ernest Albert Bradford, a commercial clerk for a wallpaper manufacturer, and his wife Sarah Ann. In 1914 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank at its Manchester Whitworth Street branch.

 

In June 1916 Bradford left the bank to serve as an Able Seaman in the Machine Gun Battalion of the Royal Naval Reserve. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 8 October 1918. He was 21 years old.
