James Campbell was born in Dumbarton in 1891, the son of James and Jane Campbell. He started working for Commercial Bank of Scotland in June 1907.

 

During the First World War Campbell left his job at the bank's Glasgow Bothwell Street branch to join the army. Private Campbell of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, attached to the Infantry Brigade (Signals), was killed in action in France on 20 November 1917. He was 26 years old.

 

James Campbell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
