Richard Dinwoodie was born in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire, in 1897, the son of James and Jane Dinwoodie. In January 1915 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Lockerbie branch.

 

During the First World War Dinwoodie joined the army, serving as a Private in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He died on 14 December 1916 of wounds received in action in France. He was 19 years old.

 

Richard Dinwoodie is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
