William Rutherford Douglas was born in Selkirk in about September 1890, the son of James Douglas, a police constable, and his wife Margaret. From 1906 he worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland. In March 1915 he was appointed accountant at its Biggar branch.

 

During the First World War Douglas joined the army, initially in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and later in the Army Ordnance Corps. Lance Corporal William Rutherford Douglas died of cholera at Baghdad on 12 November 1917. He was 27 years old.

 

William Douglas is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
