Archibald Macalister Gardiner was born in India on 12 December 1893, the son of Archibald Gardiner, a merchant there, and his wife Margaret. He grew up in Campbeltown, Scotland, and was educated at Campbeltown Grammar School and at Fettes College, Edinburgh. In May 1911 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

At the outbreak of war in 1914 Gardiner left his job at the bank's Campbeltown branch to join the army. He was later commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Second Lieutenant Archibald Macalister Gardiner died on 24 May 1916 of wounds received in action near Loos. He was 22 years old.

 

Archibald Gardiner is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
