John Parker Gourlay was born in Partick in 1898, the son of William Parker Gourlay and his wife Nissie. In April 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland. In November 1915 he joined the staff of the bank's Glasgow Yoker branch.

 

During the First World War Gourlay left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 26 September 1917. He was 19 years old.

 

John Gourlay is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
