Andrew Smith Henderson was born in Kirkcaldy in 1893, the son of David Henderson, a commercial traveller, and his wife Helen. In May 1909 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkcaldy Pathhead branch.

 

During the First World War Henderson left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action on the Somme on 24 April 1917. He was 23 years old.

 

Andrew Henderson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
