John Horne

John Austen Horne was born in Westwell, Kent, on 7 April 1893, the eldest son of William Smart Horne and his wife Ann Elizabeth. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its Maidstone branch.

 

Early in the First World War Horne left the bank to go on military service. He served in Gallipoli and Palestine, and by 1918 was a Second Lieutenant in the Dragoon Guards. Having served almost throughout the war, he died in England on 2 November 1918 of pneumonia resulting from influenza. He was 25 years old.

 

John Horne is commemorated on bank war memorials at NatWest Maidstone branch and NatWest City of London office.
