Robert Lapsley Hannah was born in Falkirk in 1895, the third son of David Hannah, a millinery and fancy goods merchant, and his wife Mary. In July 1911 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Falkirk branch.

 

During the First World War Hannah left the bank to go on military service, initially as a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was commissioned into the Highland Light Infantry in May 1916, and by 1918 was a Captain in the same regiment. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 25 March 1918. He was 22 years old.

 

Robert Hannah is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

Remembering Robert Lapsley Hannah who rests eternally alongside my great grand uncle Private Richard Bilsborough in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt, France. Rest in peace.
