William Ernest Hall was born in Portadown, County Armagh, in 1896, the son of Thomas John Hall and his wife Ellen Margaret. He worked for Ulster Bank.
In December 1914 Hall left his job at the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Irish Regiment. He was taken prisoner and died of pneumonia in a German hospital on 28 October 1918. He was 22 years old.
William Hall is commemorated on two memorials at Ulster Bank’s Belfast head office: its roll of honour for staff who served in the First World War and its memorial for those who fell.
