William Henderson

William Henderson was born in Dumfriesshire in 1896, the son of Thomas Henderson and his wife Barbara Jane. In September 1915 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Annan branch.

 

During the First World War Henderson left the bank to join the army, becoming a Lance Corporal in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 18 August 1917. He was 20 years old.

 

William Henderson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
