William Laing

William Hill Laing was born in Scotland in 1895, the son of John and Elizabeth Laing. In March 1910 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

During the First World War Laing left his job at the bank's Edinburgh West End branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium on 23 April 1915. He was 20 years old.

 

William Laing is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
