Benjamin Forbes Meiklejohn was born in Thurso, Caithness, in 1889, the son of James Meiklejohn, a labourer, and his wife Alexandrina. In January 1905 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Thurso branch. In October 1909 he moved to the bank's head office in Edinburgh.

 

In November 1916 Meiklejohn left the bank to go on military service. Private Meiklejohn of the Seaforth Highlanders, attached to the Machine Gun Corps, died of gas poisoning in France on 21 September 1918.

 

Benjamin Meiklejohn is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
