John McDavid

John Rae McDavid was born in Scotland in 1899, the first son of Joseph and Isabella McDavid. In June 1916 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Newton Stewart branch.

 

During the First World War McDavid left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He died on 12 April 1918 of wounds received in action on the Western Front. He was 18 years old.

 

John McDavid is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
