Alexander Nicolson was born in Grangemouth in 1894, the son of John and Euphemia Nicolson. In April 1911 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Grangemouth branch.

 

During the First World War Nicolson left the bank to join the army, becoming a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was killed in action in Belgium on 29 November 1917. He was 23 years old.

 

Alexander Nicolson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
