Edward William Phibbs was born in Manchester in 1882, the son of Robert Foden Phibbs and his wife Hannah. He worked as a clerk for Williams Deacon's Bank.

 

In March 1917 Phibbs left his job at the bank's Manchester St Ann Street branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Army Service Corps. He drowned at sea, in the Mediterranean, on 4 May 1917. He was 35 years old.
