John Smeaton Radford was born in Manchester in 1884, the son of John Smeaton Radford and his wife Sarah Ann. He worked for Williams Deacon's Bank.

 

During the First World War Radford left his job at the bank's Manchester St Ann Street branch to join the army. Private Radford of the Shropshire Yeomanry, attached to the Cheshire Regiment, was killed in action on the Western Front on 5 September 1916. He was 32 years old.
