Ralph Smith

Ralph McKay Smith was born in Kilmarnock in 1899, the son of William Smith, a grocer's salesman, and his wife Jane Guthrie Smith. In July 1915 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Morningside branch. In October 1916 he moved to the head office secretary's department. The following year he returned to Morningside.

 

Smith later left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 21 September 1918. He was 19 years old.

 

Ralph Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
