Sydney Smith was born on 8 March 1880. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

During the First World War Smith left his job at the bank's London office to go on military service. By 1918 he was a Captain in the East Surrey Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 19 May 1918. He was 38 years old.

 

Sydney Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
