Walter Andrew Stewart was born on 8 October 1882, the son of Andrew and Christina Stewart. In 1898 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

During the First World War Stewart left his job at the bank's Glasgow Hutchesontown branch, where he had worked since 1913, to join the army. By 1917 he was a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, on active service on the Western Front. He was killed in action there on 5 September 1917. He was 34 years old.

 

Walter Stewart is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
