Thomas Tough worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland from 1907. In April 1914 he was appointed accountant at the bank's Kilwinning branch.

 

During the First World War Tough joined the army, serving as a Private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was posted to France in November 1915, and killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916.

 

Thomas Tough is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
