John Arthur Vessey was born in Owmby by Spital, Lincolnshire, in 1894, the son of Frederick Arthur Vessey, a tailor, and his wife Betsey. In 1913 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank.

 

During the First World War Vessey left his job at the bank's Rochdale branch to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He was accidentally killed while flying in France on 12 June 1917.
