John Cecil Wilkinson was born in Cupar, Fife, on 24 April 1896, the son of William Dempster Wilkinson and his wife Cecelia. In March 1912 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

During the First World War Wilkinson left his job at the bank's Cupar branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was killed in action in France on 6 January 1917. He was 20 years old.

 

John Wilkinson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
