Robert Young was born in Hawick in 1897, the son of Alexander Young, a baker, and his wife Mary Eleanor. In August 1912 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Hawick branch.

 

During the First World War Young joined the army, serving as a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium on 3 August 1917. He was 19 years old. 

 

Robert Young is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
